ART 1 – Course Syllabus

“HIGH CHALLENGE . . . HIGH SUCCESS!”

WELCOME to Art 1!
This class is going to have a very exciting and creative semester. My goal for this course is to enable you to experience the beauty and complexity found in the world of art. I am so glad to have you in this class.

Course Outline:
• The basic Elements of Art: line, color, value, shape, form and texture.
• The basic Principles of Art: unity, balance, variety, repetition, emphasis, rhythm, movement, and proportion.
• Creative Expression: through original student art projects utilizing a variety of art media and appropriate skills – drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking.
• Art History: exploration of famous artists and art movements.
• Careers in Art: introduction to careers dependent on art backgrounds.
• Art Evaluation: develop tools to make informed judgments of artworks.
• Vocabulary Lists and Tests: weekly vocabulary words and test will be given.

Art Safety Rules:
Please be aware this list is not comprehensive and does not cover every possible safety issue for the art room. Always be careful and use common sense . . . and please, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

• ART SUPPLIES MAY NOT BE TAKEN OUT OF CLASSROOM WITHOUT TEACHER APPROVAL AND STUDENT CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE.
• Art Supply Room – ENTER ONLY WHEN TEACHER GIVES PERSMISSION!
• Use caution with heated tools and materials.
• Do not put plastics or clay in the sink.
• Use caution with materials that stain: ink, paint, markers, dyes, and so forth.
• Do not breathe dangerous fumes: spray paint, rubber cement, glue, lacquer/shellac, turpentine, printing inks, and so forth.
• Be careful with sharp objects: razor blades, gouges, x-acto knives, chisels, needles, scissors, and other art tools.

Grading Policy:

Daily Work 25% *
Vocabulary Tests 25%
Projects/Tests 50% *

*Note: Grading rubrics will be used for all art projects and daily work.

Roll of Viva Paper Towels
Roll of Blue Masking Tape




ART 1 STUDENT OBJECTIVES



1. Art of Perception – Sketchbook Diary
a. Develop the skills to observe and illustrated the world around
you.
b. Develop the ability to reflect on your experiences.
c. Give yourself the freedom to dream and enter the imagination.
d. Organize your ideas for personal artwork in terms of art
elements and art principles.
e. Analyze your personal artwork and the work of others through the application of art elements and principles.
f. Develop skills for critical thinking and problem-solving.

2. Art of Creative Expression – Original Artwork
a. Create visual art from your perception and observation.
b. Create designs for practical usage.
c. Effectively explore and apply the media and tools of: design,
drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture

3. Art of Discovery – Powerpoint Presentations
a. Explore the historical and contemporary trends and styles of art.
b. Explore cultural influences on art.
c. Discover the career opportunities in art.

4. Art of Judgment – Self and Group Critique
a. Interpret, evaluate, and justify personal artistic decisions.
b. Analyze artwork of others.
c. Participate in an art show and art contest.
Art 1 Assignments

1. Art Journal – Studio Planning (Due each Monday for Grading)
a. 5 weekly sketches – total of 80 for semester
b. Observe nature and human made objects.
c. Develop the practice of sketching at all times.
Sketch whatever you see.
d. Record ideas and thoughts for future artwork.
e. Develop the habit of practicing techniques discovered during class.

2. Resource File – Studio Planning (Check each 3 weeks/ final grade May 16, 2008)
Compile pictures and ideas for future artwork. This file must be complied in the 1 inch notebook.

3. Produce artwork from the following media:
a. Design
b. Drawing
c. Painting
d. Printmaking
e. Sculpture

4. Powerpoint Presentation on a selected artist and the art style of the artist.
a. Select an artist from a predetermined list.
b. Research the artist and art style.
c. Compile and present a powerpoint presentation.

5. Powerpoint Presentation on a career opportunity in art.
a. Select a career opportunity in art.
b. Research the career.
c. Compile and present a powerpoint presentation.

6. Analyze Artwork – Personal and Others
a. Oral analysis with teacher about each project.
b. Written analysis on 3 pieces of original artwork.
c. Written analysis on 1 piece of artwork produced by someone else.
d. Group discussion in analyzing various pieces.
e. Participation in a juried art contest.
f. Participation in an art show.
